ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Wednesday said Pakistan can only progress as a democratic country.
While meeting a delegation of Supreme Court Bar Council, Chaudhry said “We have to remain united for the supremacy of law and constitution.” “Only a democratic Pakistan can progress,” said the CJ.
He said that the bench and the bar have a common agenda of supremacy of law and constitution.
Bar Council’s president Yasin Azad said that any unconstitutional step will not be accepted. “A military government will not be accepted,” he added. Earlier, a meeting of the Bar appreciated the apex court’s NRO verdict and demanded to handle noncompliant with an iron fist.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's SC on Tuesday said PM Yousaf Raza Gilani was "not an honest man" and slammed his government for "willful disobedience" while warning him that he could be removed from office if he does not take action on corruption cases against president Zardari.
The order adds to the problems of the government that has been at the loggerheads with the military over an alleged memo seeking the US help to rein in the powerful institution and preventing a coup in May. The court had earlier ordered a judicial commission to investigate the scandal that threatens to implicate Zardari.
The court noted that Gilani did not appear to be a "sagacious" person as it is evident from his defiance of the court orders. It noted that the president's recent interview to Geo TV and the PM's speeches reflected that their loyalty was above their oath to protect the Constitution. "The president in an interview , refused to accept the court's orders," it said.
"It is quite clear to us now that the federal government and the National Accountability Bureau are not serious in the matter at all and those concerned are only interested in delaying and prolonging the matter on one pretext or another.'' It said the court has the option to record findings and hand down a declaration that would have "an effect of a permanent nature when it comes to the prime minister's qualification to be chosen as a member of the Parliament".
