England paceman Stuart Broad took a hat trick Saturday as India lost five wickets for 15 runs to be bowled out for 288, a lead of 67 on the second day of the second test at Trent Bridge.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was caught by James Anderson at second slip for 5 off Broad, who then trapped Harbhajan Singh lbw next ball. Praveen Kumar faced the hat trick ball and was clean bowled by a delivery that jagged back off the seam.
TV replays showed Harbhajan had inside edged the ball on to his pads, but India’s refusal to accept the Decision Review System before the series meant the dismissal stood.
Before India had added a run, Dravid holed out to Bresnan to be caught by Alastair Cook at third man after top-scoring on 117.
Broad was denied a sixth wicket when Cook dropped Ishant Sharma, but he wrapped up the innings when Sharma was caught by Ian Bell at short leg soon after.
Broad finished with figures of 6-46 from 24.1 overs, including a spell of 5-0 from 16 balls
At one stage, India was cruising at 267-4 with Rahul Dravid hitting 15 fours from 235 balls, while Yuvraj Singh made 62.
Laxman reached 50, from 104 balls, with a stylish cover drive and appeared settled until he was caught behind off Bresnan with only four more added to his total, ending a partnership of 93 with Dravis .
When Sachin Tendulkar joined Dravid, it meant the two leading run scorers in the history of test cricket were at the crease, and their partnership initially looked ominous for England.
Tendulkar was off the mark with a seemingly effortless four from Jonathan Trott through the covers, but he perished to the sixth ball of the afternoon session, edging Broad to Strauss at first slip on 16.
Trott then injured his shoulder while fielding and left the ground for a scan. Trott will not field again on Saturday and may be unable to bat in England’s second innings.
Dravid completed his 50, from 131 balls, steering Broad through third man.
Suresh Raina by contrast never looked comfortable, slicing a four over the slips to get off the mark before he fell to Anderson, caught at backward point by Morgan, having lasted just 22 balls.
Yuvraj should have been out for four after slashing Broad to gully, but he was dropped by Kevin Pietersen.
It proved an expensive error as Yuvraj’s confidence grew. Both he and Dravid singled England spinner Graeme Swann out for punishment and India quickly overtook England’s first innings total of 221 early in the evening session.
Yuvraj reached his 50 from 94 balls and having brought up the 100 partnership with a single from Swann, Dravid clinched his century from 209 balls with an elegant paddle shot for four to the fine leg boundary.
The stand of 128 for the fifth wicket was finally broken when Broad drew an edge from Yuvraj, who was caught behind.
India seemed to be running away with the game until Broad struck again.
England were 24 for one at the close of play, still trailing by 43 runs with nine second innings wickets in hand.
Captain Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell were batting on six and nine respectively at the draw of stumps.
Ishant Sharma claimed Alistair Cook (5) at the slip cordon and Ian Bell came in at one down as regular number three Jonathan Trott appeared to have hurt his right shoulder while tumbling to stop a shot from Dravid in the afternoon session and did not come out to bat.
