England Vs India, 2nd Test - History in India's Favour

Tantalising England of victory Mahendra Singh Dhoni pushes Shantha Kumaran Sreeshant for a cheeky single of the last ball of the over. With nine wickets down India’ defeat at Lords in its first encounter of the three match test series against England was impending. M.S Dhoni’s tryst with fortune managed a draw with bad light spoiling the play for England. It was way back in 2007 when India bounced back to win an historic overseas series 1-0.
Circumstances stood similar with India in a spot of bother in the first test of the four match series in England. Weather Gods seemed to favour England by staying away and ensured they were rewarded for their sure dominance in the 2000 test match played at Lords. Fortune marooned India, with injuries striking key players out through the decisive moments. Zaheer injured his hamstring, while a feisty sweep hurt Gautam Gambhir’s elbow and the 100th test hundred eluded Sachin Tendulkar as he suffered from viral infection during the second innings hampering India chances to put a fight at least.
Reasons might be numerous for India’s defeat but it reinforced its reputation as slow starters. Since 2001, India has been haunted with first test defeats in Australia, Sri Lanka (twice) and South Africa. Brushing aside triumphant against minnow teams like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. India managed to lose five overseas test series and administered three series as draws with the last two coming from Sri Lanka (2010) and South Africa.
What intrigues many critics is the performance of India’s match winners in the opening encounters. Harbhajan Singh with his 400+ wickets in test cricket has struggled miserable to augment his kitty in the openers repeatedly. Averaging 60.40 with 30 wickets in his 14 first Tests overseas (excluding one-off Tests) Harbhajan’s wicket column despises his calibre to be known as The Turbanator. Adding only one five wicket haul of 6 for 63 with a match figure of 7 for 120 against New Zealand at Hamilton in 2007, his average excluding this match stands inflated at 73.56 abroad.
What appears oblique is the performance of fourth innings specialist Very Very Special Laxman. . His average of 36.69 resolves to be an imperative reason for India poor performance. Unable to capitalise on starts Laxman’s only managed seven half centuries and no century out of his 21 over 20 scores in last 30 innings in the last decade. With 16 half centuries and a lone ton his lacklustre performance have diminished prospects of better the performance.
Ironically both Harbhajan and Laxman have astonishing stats in the second Tests. Laxman recorded three hundreds in his 28 innings at an average of 60 which is higher than his overall average of. Harbhajan’s yardstick performances in later part of the series balance his off track presentation in the first Test. Gautam Ghambir average of 70.75 in his two second Tests away defiantly demonstrates his essence of class but the sample size might dilute his endeavour.
India has mastered the act of bouncing back hard. With wins in Kandy (2001), Port of Spain (2002), Adelaide (2003), Trent Bridge (2007), Galle (2008) and Durban (2010) India showcased their metal in winning second test with their sure potential. Conjuring much happier memories India ensured to win twice in last three years one in Sri Lanka in 2008 and the other in South Africa last year. But India ended on the losing side in the third Test and the series to Sri Lanka 1-2 and drew the last Test against South Africa hence drawing the series 1-1.
Facing the brunt, most of the blame was passed on to the batsmen. Mr. dependable Rahul Dravid has performed consistently irrespective of any overseas Test. The deceiving fact of Virender Sewhag is that he averages very high in the first encounters and loses his grip as the series proceeds. Sachin Tendulkar too has a very defining stature considering his first Test contributions as his averages hitches to 40 for the second and third Tests.
India’s four to nine win-loss records in first Tests of away series, with the four wins coming in Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand and West Indies has been an alarming factor. Judging by its second Tests feats, they’ve won six times and lost only four, which means their win-loss ratio in second Tests is almost three-and-a-half times, times their first-Test ratio.
With stats speaking degree of commitment India disposed optimism evidently won’t die down. MS Dhoni might have hoped to repeat the 2007 draw at Lords but the stakes were high and the better team embraced victory. Garnishing strength to win at Trent Bridge, where India had beaten England in 2007 would require valour in the Team exertion. History has its wager on India but certainly the superior team would swim across to glory.
