England pacer Stuart Broad struck in his first over to claim inform batsman Abhinav Mukund on Day 4 of the first Test match at Lord's on SundaysEarlier England declared second inning at 269/6 after tea setting a target of 458 runs to win. Indians were 80/1 after 27 ovres at stump. Laxman(32) and Dravid(34) were at the crease.
Ajay Mukund was cruising steadily at 12 when Broad dismissed him in the same fashion as in first Innings. He got out the same way in the first innings. Broad delivered a back of a length angled across just outside off, Mukund hung back and stabbed at it without any feet movement, got an inside edge that clatters into middle and leg stump.
No side has made more in the 2,000 match history of Test cricket to win a Test in the fourth innings than the 418 for seven posted by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2002/03. The highest ever successful chase recorded at Lord's is by West Indies way back in 1984 when they chased down the target of 344 runs based on Gordon Greenidge's epic 214.
Matt Prior was 103 not out and Stuart Broad 74 not out, their unbroken seventh-wicket partnership worth 162 at nearly a run-a-ball, when England captain Andrew Strauss declared for the second time in the match.
England were 174/6 at tea with a healthy lead of 362 runs despite a spirited Indian bowling performance.
England were in some trouble at 107/6 when Broad arrived on a pair. Since then, it has been a Prior-Broad show at Lord's. They ran extremely well and collected the odd boundary to keep the pressure on India. India came back well in the first session but this partnership has put the game beyond them.
Ishant Sharma spread panic in English ranks as he claimed another wicket post-lunch to reduce England to 107/6.
Ishant claimed Eoin Morgan post-lunch. He banged in a well directed short one, Morgan was surprised but continued with the pull, only managed to mishit it to mid wicket where Gambhir dived forward to take it inches from the ground. England were reduced to 107 runs after the loss of six wickets.
Ishant blew away the top-order as England were reduced to 72 for five in the pre-lunch session but a handy first innings lead of 188 meant that the overall lead swelled to 260. Indians bowled 26 overs in the morning session and conceded only 67 runs while accounting for five England wickets. The last four England wickets fell within a space of 32 balls for the addition of only eight runs.
Ishant dismissed Kevin Pitersen (1), Ian Bell (0) and Jonathan Trott (22) in two spells of hostile fast bowling for the morning figures of 11-5-14-3. Indeed, his productive spell had sizzling figures of 5-3-4-3.
Indeed England lost four of their prime batsmen in a matter of 32 balls as Harbhajan Singh had accounted for England skipper Andrew Strauss (32) in the over before Sharma began his mayhem.
Ironically, both Ishant and Harbhajan, presently the toast of the Indian team, had sent down 32 and 35 wicketless overs conceding 128 and 152 runs respectively in England's first innings.
