Jamia Protests against Police raids

“The Delhi : Police has turned Jamia Nagar into a hunting ground. Residents of the area are being made the scapegoat for every criminal activity and terrorist attack. The entire locality is in the grip of fear. Children and students are living under stigma,” Manisha Sethi, president of the association, alleged.
Last week, a police team descended on Jamia Nagar after midnight in search of illegals. They rounded up eight residents who later submitted documents to prove their Indian nationality. As an agitated crowd gathered to protest the detention, local police fired in the air to scatter the crowd.
Six policemen were suspended after the raid.
“Is this a democratic set-up?” asked Dr Farah Farrooqi, associate professor at Jamia Millia Islamia. “Police claim that every criminal has his roots here. Detaining the poor and innocent is part of political appraisal. What kind of a state establishment is this?”
The association said students-teachers collaboration was one solution. “If someone is guilty, we will support the investigation. But we will not tolerate detention of the innocent,” said Mona Das, Delhi University professor.(IE)
