Minor ‘raped’, body found in police station

The 14-year-old victim’s father, Intezam Ali, accused the SO and a constable of raping and killing his daughter. The victim’s mother, Tarannum, who was the first to find the body, said the girl’s knees were touching the ground and her scarf was wrapped around her neck, with its ends tied to the branch. She claimed there was blood on the body.
Kheri SP D K Rai confirmed that the policemen tried to hush up the incident by not initiating any legal proceedings after the body was recovered. The body was taken in police custody only after the SP was informed, said Rai.
The office of the SDM is also located within the premises of the police station, but he remained unaware about the incident till the SP asked him to visit the spot at night.
“The erring cops have been suspended and the probe has been handed over to the Additional SP. A post-mortem examination is being conducted by a panel of three doctors to ascertain the cause of the girl’s death and to confirm if she was raped,” said Special DGP (Law & Order) Brij Lal.
Tarannum said she had sent her daughter to look for a missing buffalo in the morning. When the girl, did not return even after 2 pm, Tarannum started searching for her. She finally found the body in the police station compound, just 200 yards from her house.
Tarannum said the police tried to dismiss the death as a suicide case.
LUCKNOW: The role of the police has come under scanner following the alleged rape and murder of a minor, whose body was found hanging from a tree near an under-construction block in Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur-Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The girl's body was recovered on Friday night.
The girl's mother alleged that her daughter was raped and murdered by the policemen posted in the thana.
While senior police officials here feigned ignorance about the action taken against the alleged guilty, reports quoting Kheri district police chief D.K. Rai said 11 policemen had been suspended. In fact, almost the entire force in the thana has been suspended — two sub-inspectors, one head constable and eight constables. The additional SP of Lakhimpur-Kheri has been asked to conduct a probe.
Reports said the 14-year-old girl, who stayed near the Nighasan police station, entered the thana premises to retrieve her buffalo, which had strayed into the area on Friday. It was alleged that she was apprehended by the policemen. When the girl did not return, her mother went to the police station but was allegedly chased away by the policemen. Later, the minor's body was found hanging from a tree and the police allegedly made it a case of suicide.
On Saturday, Samajwadi Party supporters led by the MLAs, R.A. Usmani and Krishna Gopal Patel staged a dharna at the police station demanding action against the guilty. The Leader of Opposition Shivpal Singh Yadav, said at a news conference here that the law and order situation in the State had gone out of control under the present regime.
Mr. Yadav said the Bahujan Samaj Party government had failed to curb the increasing crime rate with the police unable to nab the culprits. This was evident from the recent incidents in Saharanpur, Kalpi and Etah. A jeweller Vijay Verma, his son, Mithun and their private gunner Santosh Kumar were gunned down by unidentified assailants in Etah on Friday.
